1. Fundamentals of Bearing Load Analysis
In rotating machinery, rolling-element bearings (deep groove ball bearings, angular contact bearings, cylindrical and tapered roller bearings) support shafts and constrain motion while transmitting external forces into the housing.
| Bearing Load Quantity | Symbol | SI Unit | Tribological Engineering Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radial Force Component | Fr | N (lbf) | Force acting perpendicular to the shaft centerline (gravity, belt tension, gear separating force). |
| Axial Thrust Component | Fa | N (lbf) | Force acting parallel to the shaft centerline (helical gear thrust, fan/propeller reaction, thermal expansion). |
| Geometric Resultant Force | F | N (lbf) | True vector resultant magnitude (F = √(Fr² + Fa²)) for structural housing and bolt stress sizing. |
| Dynamic Equivalent Load | P | N (lbf) | ISO 281 constant radial load yielding the same subsurface shear fatigue life as combined Fr and Fa. |
| Static Equivalent Load | P₀ | N (lbf) | ISO 76 contact stress metric evaluating permanent plastic raceway Brinelling deformation at standstill. |
2. Radial vs. Axial Thrust Load Components
Bearings are subjected to forces generated by adjacent machine elements:
- Radial Loads (Fr): Generated by rotor deadweight, drive shaft unbalanced mass centrifugal forces, and transmission tension from Belt Tension Drives → (F_shaft ≈ T₁ + T₂).
- Axial Thrust Loads (Fa): Generated by helical gear helix angles (Fa = Ft · tan β), bevel gear pitch cones, centrifugal pump impeller hydrodynamic forces, and power screws analyzed via our Lead Screw Torque Calculator →.
3. Geometric Resultant Force vs. ISO 281 Equivalent Load
A common mistake in mechanical engineering is assuming that the vector resultant F = √(Fr² + Fa²) represents the load acting on the bearing raceway for life calculation.
Why Vector Resultant (F) Cannot Be Used for Fatigue Life
In a rolling bearing, rolling elements rotate through loaded and unloaded zones. An axial thrust force Fa shifts all rolling elements against one raceway shoulder, causing 360° contact loading, whereas a radial force Fr is supported by only a fraction of the rolling elements across a ~180° arc.
4. ISO 281 Equivalent Dynamic Load Formulation
Standardized under ISO 281:2007, the equivalent dynamic radial load P combines radial and axial components using empirically calibrated weighting factors X and Y:
ISO 281 Equivalent Dynamic Radial Load
P = X · V · F_r + Y · F_aP- Dynamic equivalent radial load (Newtons, N)
F_r- Applied radial force (N)
F_a- Applied axial thrust force (N)
V- Rotation factor: V = 1.0 (inner ring rotates relative to load), V = 1.2 (outer ring rotates)
X- Radial load factor (dimensionless, per ISO 281 Table 3)
Y- Axial load factor (dimensionless, per ISO 281 Table 3)
e- Limiting factor threshold for Fa / (V·Fr)
For single-row deep groove ball bearings with Fa / (V·Fr) ≤ e, set X = 1 and Y = 0 (P = V·Fr).
5. Contact Angle (α) & Thrust Load Lines
The ability of a bearing to support combined radial and axial loads is dictated by its internal contact angle α, defined between the line of action of the ball/roller contact force and the radial plane perpendicular to the shaft axis:
Deep Groove Ball Bearings (α ≈ 0°)
Under pure radial load, α = 0°. When subjected to axial thrust, internal radial clearance causes the balls to ride up the groove shoulder, establishing an induced dynamic contact angle (α ≈ 8°–14°) that governs the threshold e.
Angular Contact & Tapered Roller (α ≈ 15°–40°)
Manufactured with asymmetric raceway shoulders specifically to support substantial unidirectional axial thrust loads alongside heavy radial forces.
6. ISO 76 Static Equivalent Load (P₀) & Plastic Brinelling
When a bearing is stationary, oscillates slowly (N < 10 RPM), or experiences peak transient shock loads, failure occurs not by fatigue spalling, but by permanent plastic indentation called Brinelling .
ISO 76 Static Equivalent Radial Load & Safety Factor
P₀ = max(X₀ · F_r + Y₀ · F_a, F_r), s₀ = C₀ / P₀P₀- Static equivalent radial load (N)
X₀- Static radial load factor (e.g., X₀ = 0.6 for deep groove ball bearings)
Y₀- Static axial load factor (e.g., Y₀ = 0.5 for deep groove ball bearings)
C₀- Basic static load rating from manufacturer catalog (N)
s₀- Static safety factor (dimensionless)
Per ISO 76, C0 is the static load producing total permanent indentation of 0.0001 · dw (0.01% of rolling element diameter) at the maximum contact point.
7. Connection to ISO 281 L₁₀ Fatigue Rating Life
Once the dynamic equivalent load P is evaluated, it is fed directly into the ISO 281 basic rating-life equation:
Basic Rating Life Equation
L₁₀ = (C / P)^p, L₁₀h = [10⁶ / (60 · N)] · (C / P)^pL₁₀- Basic rating life at 90% reliability (million revolutions)
L₁₀h- Basic rating life in operating hours (hrs)
C- Basic dynamic load rating from manufacturer catalog (N)
P- Equivalent dynamic bearing load from this calculator (N)
p- Life exponent: p = 3 (ball bearings), p = 10/3 ≈ 3.333 (roller bearings)
N- Shaft rotational speed (RPM)

8. Step-by-Step Engineering Worked Examples
Example 1 — Resultant Vector Force
A deep groove ball bearing on an overhung blower shaft is subjected to a radial load Fr = 3,000 N (fan weight + belt pull) and an axial thrust load Fa = 4,000 N (air reaction).
1. Geometric Resultant: F = √(3000² + 4000²) = √(9,000,000 + 16,000,000) = √25,000,000 = 5,000 N
2. Resultant Force Angle: θ = atan(4000 / 3000) = atan(1.333) = 53.13°
Example 2 — ISO 281 Dynamic Equivalent Load
For the same bearing with Fr = 3,000 N and Fa = 1,000 N. From catalog data for Fa / (V · Fr) = 1000 / 3000 = 0.333 > e = 0.22, the factors are X = 0.56 and Y = 1.63.
1. Radial Contribution: X · Fr = 0.56 × 3,000 N = 1,680 N
2. Axial Contribution: Y · Fa = 1.63 × 1,000 N = 1,630 N
3. ISO 281 Dynamic Equivalent: P = 1,680 + 1,630 = 3,310 N
Notice: Resultant is √(3000² + 1000²) = 3,162 N, but ISO 281 Equivalent P is 3,310 N.

This calculator computes resultant forces and ISO 281 / ISO 76 equivalent bearing loads based on user-entered load factors (X, Y, X₀, Y₀). In production engineering, always verify X and Y factors against the bearing manufacturer's published catalog for the specific bearing series and contact angle. Preload, thermal expansion, lubrication viscosity, and structural housing misalignment must also be reviewed.
